Hereford Cathedral, 1951. Hereford Cathedral, built 1079-1095 with very thick stone walls in the Norman or English Romanesque style. The cathedrals were built by incoming Benedictine and Cistercian monks. Semi-circular arch, zig-zag, rope and foliage decorations. Shirley Markham (1931-1999) studied Graphic Design and Illustration at Central School of Art in London from 1950-1952. The writer, artist, poet, and illustrator Mervyn Peake (1911-1968) was one of her tutors, and her style of drawing was also influenced by other British illustrators such as Edward Ardizzone, Quentin Blake and Edward Bawden. Markham spent time in the Dolomite Mountains in Italy, and also visited Rome, sketching classical buildings. After graduating from Central, she worked as a graphic designer, producing book illustrations, cartoons for comics, menus and programmes. She gave up her promising career however when she got married in 1957. Middle-class women at that time were expected to devote their energies to bringing up children and running the home, and despite her obvious talent, she lacked the confidence to return to illustration. Her portfolio remained in the family attic for many years, but now her work is published here for the first time

The photograph was captured by Shirley Markham (1931-1999), an exceptionally talented artist who studied Graphic Design and Illustration at the renowned Central School of Art in London from 1950 to 1952. During her time there, she had the privilege of being taught by Mervyn Peake (1911-1968), a prominent writer, artist, poet, and illustrator. Markham's artistic style drew inspiration not only from Peake but also from other notable British illustrators like Edward Ardizzone, Quentin Blake, and Edward Bawden. Markham's passion for art extended beyond the borders of England as she spent time in Italy's Dolomite Mountains where she sketched classical buildings in Rome. After graduating from Central School of Art, she embarked on a successful career as a graphic designer producing book illustrations, comics cartoons menus, and programs. However promising her career may have been though when Markham married in 1957 societal expectations prevailed over her own aspirations. Middle-class women during that era were often expected to prioritize their roles as mothers and homemakers above all else. Despite her undeniable talent for illustration, Mary lacked the confidence to return to it after starting a family. For many years following this decision, the remarkable body of work that Markham created remained hidden away in her family attic until now when it is finally being published for the first time.
