EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Hereward The Wake At Ely, 1902" showcases the iconic Anglo-Saxon rebel Hereward the Wake in a moment of contemplation and rebellion. Created by artist Patten Wilson, this image vividly depicts Hereward attacking Peterborough Abbey in protest against William I's imposition of a Norman abbot during the early 20th century. Leaning on his elbow with an air of determination, Hereward stands as a symbol of resistance against the Norman Conquest and William the Conqueror's reign as King of England. His bearded face exudes both strength and wisdom while his eyes fixate on something beyond our view. Clad in medieval attire complete with helmet and shield, he embodies heroism amidst adversity. The monochrome composition adds depth to this historic scene, emphasizing its timeless significance. As we gaze upon this print, we are transported back to a pivotal moment in English history when popular Anglo-Saxon resistance flourished under Hereward's leadership from his base near Ely. Inspired by Charles Kingsley's novel published in 1865, which immortalized him as an eponymous hero, Hereward continues to captivate our imagination even today. This engraving from A Childs History of England by Charles Dickens serves as a powerful reminder of one man's unwavering spirit and defiance against injustice. As we contemplate this image captured over a century ago by Patten Wilson, it invites us to reflect on themes such as rebellion, heroism, and the enduring power of literature to preserve historical narratives for generations to come.
