EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases John Philip Kemble, a prominent English actor of the 18th and 19th centuries. The image, taken in 1830 by an unknown creator, captures Kemble's dignified presence as he gazes away from the camera. Kemble was not only known for his exceptional acting skills but also for his role as manager at Theatre Royal, Drury Lane and later at Theatre Royal, Covent Garden. However, it was during his time at Covent Garden that he became embroiled in controversy. Following a devastating fire at the theater, Kemble decided to increase ticket prices which sparked public outrage and led to what is now famously known as the Old Price Riots. The portrait reveals Kemble dressed in elegant attire befitting a man of his stature - a tailored coat with a cravat neatly tied around his neck. His hair is impeccably styled while he exudes an air of sophistication and refinement. This engraving comes from "Biographical Illustrations" by Alfred Howard, published in London, Glasgow, and Dublin in 1830. It serves as a valuable historical document capturing one of Britain's most celebrated actors during an era when theater played a significant role in entertainment. Through this photograph print of John Philip Kemble, we are transported back to the world of classical British theater where talent met controversy amidst changing times.
