Launch of H.M. Steam-Frigate "Leopard", at Deptford, on Tuesday, 1850. Ship being launched on the River Thames in London. Mr. Willcox, master shipwright, under whose superintendence the launch took place, ordered the workmen to commence knocking out the dog-shores, and at the same time presented an open bottle of wine, and Captain Sir John Hill having poured out a glass, handed it to Lady Mary Fox, who drank success to the Leopard. The bottle was immediately after decorated with rosettes, and Lady Mary Fox broke it, with the remaining portion of the wine in it, on the bows of the vessel. The remaining dogshores were quickly removed, and...the fine frigate glided slowly and majestically into the river, amidst the cheers of the assembled spectators, the band playing "Britannia rules the waves". EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, the Launch of H.M. Steam-Frigate Leopard unfolds at Deptford, London, on a Tuesday in 1850. The image captures a pivotal moment in maritime history as the ship, under the watchful eye of Master Shipwright Mr. Willcox, begins its journey from the dry dock and into the River Thames. The anticipation is palpable as the workmen, under Mr. Willcox's instructions, begin to remove the dog-shores that have held the Leopard in place during its construction. In the foreground, Captain Sir John Hill presents a bottle of wine to Lady Mary Fox, who takes a sip and wishes the Leopard success before smashing the bottle against the ship's bow. The crowd, eagerly awaiting the launch, cheers as the remaining dogshores are removed, and the magnificent frigate glides gracefully into the river. The Illustrated London News, an influential publication of the time, reported on this event, describing the scene as the "fine frigate glided slowly and majestically into the river, amidst the cheers of the assembled spectators, the band playing Britannia rules the waves." The Launch of H.M. Steam-Frigate Leopard marked a significant milestone in the evolution of naval warfare, as it represented one of the first steam-powered frigates in the British Royal Navy. This photograph, though its creator remains unknown, offers a glimpse into the grandeur and excitement of a bygone era, where the launch of a new vessel was a cause for celebration and a testament to the ingenuity and craftsmanship of the time.
