Lewes Great Sheep Fair, 1850. Creator: Unknown
Lewes Great Sheep Fair, 1850. Livestock market in Sussex, held at...Landport Farm, lying at the back of the New Gaol...Among the earliest...sales of the day, were two pens of ewes belonging to the Messrs. Hampton of Applesham. Several parties were in waiting for them, and we believe one of the lots (100) was sold before the sheep were fairly in the pen, at 35s[hillings]. These sheep attracted a good deal of attention, and were much admired...For lambs the demand was very brisk...For cull ewe lambs, however, there was not much inquiry; 15s. was about the current price, and. many of these were driven away unsold....whether we take ewes, lambs, or rams, the prices of Saturday fully equalled, and in fact exceeded those of last year...The.entire number of sheep penned was, we understand, about 28, 000, being within a couple of thousand of last year's number. EDITORS COMMENTS
This image transports us back in time to the Lewes Great Sheep Fair in East Sussex, England, held in 1850. The scene unfolds at Landport Farm, situated at the back of the New Gaol, where the earliest sales of the day were about to take place. Two pens of ewes from the Hampton brothers of Applesham were the center of attention, with several eager buyers waiting in anticipation. It is said that one lot of 100 ewes was sold even before they were securely in the pen, fetching a price of 35 shillings. The demand for lambs was brisk, while the prices for cull ewe lambs remained stagnant at around 15 shillings, with many going unsold. The overall sales of sheep exceeded the previous year's numbers, with an estimated 28,000 sheep being penned, just a couple of thousand shy of the previous year's total. This engraving, published in the Illustrated London News, offers a glimpse into the bustling livestock market of the Victorian era. Men in rural attire can be seen haggling over prices, shepherds tending to their flocks, and the general hustle and bustle of the trade. The image encapsulates the spirit of rural life in 19th century Britain, showcasing the importance of agriculture and livestock farming in the region.
