EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Lewis Cass, an influential figure in American history. Born in the late 18th century, Cass dedicated his life to serving his country as a soldier, statesman, and historian. The photograph captures him around the year 1880 when he was already well into his political career. Cass's military accomplishments were notable; he served as a Brigadier-General during the War of 1812 against the British. However, it was in politics where he truly made his mark. He held various significant positions throughout his long tenure, including Governor of the Michigan Territory and Secretary of State for War. His diplomatic skills were also highly regarded as he represented America as Ambassador to France for six years. Additionally, Cass served as Senator for Michigan and later became US Secretary of State under President James Buchanan. Despite these achievements, Cass faced disappointment when running for President in 1848 but ultimately lost to Zachary Taylor. Nevertheless, this setback did not diminish his contributions or legacy. The engraving beautifully portrays Cass's distinguished appearance with its focus on his head and shoulders. This historical artifact comes from "Cassells History of the United States" a renowned publication by Edmund Ollier. Through this image, we are reminded of Lewis Cass's immense impact on American politics and society during one of its most transformative periods - the nineteenth century.
