"Music" by A. B. Clay, from the exhibition of the Royal Academy, 1862. Creator: H. Harrall. "Music" by A. B. Clay, from the exhibition of the Royal Academy, 1862. Creator: H. Harrall

"Music" by A. B. Clay, from the exhibition of the Royal Academy, 1862. Engraving of a painting. The attitude of the head and neck of the lady seated playing an accompaniment on the harmonium is very descriptive - nicely observed and gracefully expressed. And the same may be said of the elderly lady - the mother, maybe, of one or both the young ladies - who sits listening with such pleased attention, and keeping time with her hand, and thinking, perhaps, of many tender and sweet memories which music often recalls with thrilling force when the heart is deaf to all else. Music will often strike the string we thought was broken - will touch the electric chord we thought for ever mute - awake the echoes we thought had died away in the silence of years - among our native hills when all nature was resonant, or on the troubled sea of afterlife. Mr. Clay has appended to the title of his picture in the Royal Academy Catalogue the following quotation: "As for some dear familiar strain Untired we ask, and ask again, Ever in its melodious store Finding a spell unheard before". From "Illustrated London News", 1862

EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving captures the captivating moment of musical connection between two generations in the painting "Music" by A.B. Clay, exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1862. The image, created by H. Harrall, showcases the intense emotion and nostalgia evoked by the melodies played on the harmonium. The lady seated at the instrument gracefully plays an accompaniment, her head tilted in deep concentration, while the elderly lady, possibly the mother of the younger women, listens with rapt attention. Her hand keeps time with the music, and her expression suggests a flood of memories, both tender and sweet, resurfacing. Music, as Clay implies in the quote appended to the title of his painting, has the power to awaken dormant emotions and memories. It can touch the "electric chord" that we thought was mute, bringing back echoes of the past that resonate deeply within us. The painting and the engraving beautifully convey this idea, transporting us to a time when music was the language of the heart, speaking to us in a way that words cannot. The attitude of the heads and necks of both women is masterfully depicted by Clay, with the elderly lady's expression conveying a sense of deep emotion and the younger woman's a focused intensity. The painting, as described in the Illustrated London News in 1862, is a testament to Clay's ability to observe and express the human experience through art. The engraving by H. Harrall serves as a faithful representation of the original painting, allowing us to appreciate the beauty and emotion of the artwork in intricate detail.
