EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait captures Oskar II, King of Sweden and Norway (1829-1907), in the prime of his reign during the late 19th century. Painted by renowned Swedish artist Oscar Bjorck around 1897, the oil on canvas masterpiece showcases the monarch in regal attire, adorned with a grand cloak trimmed with ermine fur, and a crown resting on a velvet cushion. The King's handlebar moustache and grey beard add to his distinguished and confident appearance. Oskar II, a member of the House of Bernadotte, assumed the throne in 1872 following the death of his father, King Karl XV. He ruled both Sweden and Norway until his abdication in 1905. In this portrait, the King is depicted with a sceptre in his right hand, symbolizing his royal authority, while his left hand rests on the arm of his chair, exuding an air of calm and collected pride. The painting, held in the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, Sweden, is a testament to the rich artistic and historical heritage of the region. The vivid colors and intricate details bring the King's regal presence to life, transporting us back in time to an era of monarchs, royalty, and grandeur.
