The Owner of the Vineyard Paying his Labourers... 1850. Creator: Unknown
The Owner of the Vineyard Paying his Labourers - painted by Rembrandt - from the Gallery of the late King of Holland, at the Hague, 1850. The subject, we need scarcely add, is the Parable of the Labourers, from St. Matthew, xx. The lord of the vineyard is seated at the table, and one of the first labourers murmurs at the payment, which is no more than that paid to the "eleventh hour" labourers. On the opposite side is seated a young man, who enters the payments; and in the distance is a group of labourers. This picture is one of Rembrandt's noblest compositions...'. From "Illustrated London News", 1850

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print, titled 'The Owner of the Vineyard Paying his Labourers,' dates back to 1850 and is an engraving based on a painting by the renowned Dutch artist, Rembrandt van Rijn. The subject of this masterpiece, as we need scarcely add, is the Parable of the Labourers from the Gospel of St. Matthew, XX. The painting depicts the lord of the vineyard seated at a table, engaged in the payment of his labourers. One of the earliest labourers is seen murmuring in discontentment at the equal payment given to the eleventh hour labourers. On the opposite side, a young man enters the payment records into a ledger. In the background, a group of labourers is gathered, some wearing turbans or headgear, reflecting their diverse origins. This picture is considered one of Rembrandt's most noble compositions, showcasing his exceptional storytelling abilities and attention to detail. The print, published in the Illustrated London News in 1850, offers a glimpse into the 17th-century Dutch art scene and the biblical themes that continued to inspire artists and the public alike during the 19th century.
