CHELSEA AND WESTMINSTER HOSPITAL, FULHAM ROAD, KENSINGTON AND CHELSEA, GREATER LONDON. Sir William Doughty, Chairman of the North West Thames Regional Health Authority, shovelling concrete from a wheelbarrow during the topping out ceremony at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital.
Laing Management Contracting worked on the construction of Chelsea and Westminster Hospital on behalf of the North West Thames Regional Health Authority between 1989 and 1993. The new teaching hospital was built on the site of the old St Stephens Hospital, which was demolished in the early months of 1989. The use of fast track construction techniques enabled the entire project to be completed in less than 5 years. The hospital was officially opened by the Queen on 13 May 1993

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the momentous topping out ceremony at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in Kensington and Chelsea, Greater London. In the image, Sir William Doughty, Chairman of the North West Thames Regional Health Authority, can be seen enthusiastically shoveling concrete from a wheelbarrow. The construction of this state-of-the-art teaching hospital was undertaken by Laing Management Contracting between 1989 and 1993 on behalf of the North West Thames Regional Health Authority. The site where the hospital now stands was previously occupied by St Stephens Hospital, which was demolished in early 1989 to make way for this modern healthcare facility. Thanks to innovative fast track construction techniques employed during its development, the entire project was completed in less than five years. This achievement is truly remarkable considering the scale and complexity of such an undertaking. The significance of this event is further highlighted by its official opening on May 13th, 1993, graced by none other than Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II herself. This milestone marked a new era in healthcare provision for residents of Kensington and Chelsea. Preserved within Historic England Archive's collection, this print serves as a poignant reminder of both architectural prowess and community dedication that brought about one of London's most esteemed medical institutions.
