EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a team of dedicated window fitters diligently working on the installation of a stunning stepped atrium at Vauxhall Cross in Greater London. The iconic building, also known as the SIS or MI6 Building, was designed by renowned architect Terry Farrell and constructed by Laing Management Contracting for Regalian Properties. Originally built for commercial purposes, Vauxhall Cross was later acquired by the government to serve as the headquarters for the British Secret Intelligence Service or MI6. The construction process began in 1990 with ground works and concluded in 1992 when the structure reached its completion. The building's exterior showcases an elegant combination of precast concrete panels and metal and glass curtain walling. Notably, it features side atria and stepped atria roofs that are double-glazed and adorned with tinted toughened glass. In this snapshot from the 1990s, we witness workers fearlessly navigating ladders, ropes, cradles, and other equipment to ensure precise installation of each window pane within this architectural masterpiece. Their dedication is evident as they contribute their expertise to bring life to every detail of this ziggurat-inspired design. Preserved within Historic England Archive's collection, this photograph offers a glimpse into both the meticulous craftsmanship involved in constructing such an extraordinary landmark and the collaborative efforts required to realize its grandeur.
