EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a pair of exquisite six-panel folding screens from the Edo period in Japan. Created between 1795 and 1799, these screens are a remarkable representation of Chinese literati landscapes by renowned artists Su Shi and Tao Qian. The screens, measuring an impressive 67 3/8 x 12 ft (1711 x 3727 cm), are adorned with ink, gold leaf, and paper to create a stunning visual experience. The left screen portrays the awe-inspiring "Forbidding Grotto Pierced Precipice" which is set against the picturesque backdrop of the Yangzi River. This scene pays homage to Su Shi, a celebrated Chinese poet known as Dongpo (1037-1101), who composed the famous ode "Red Cliff". On the right screen, we find a gentler landscape featuring a scholar surrounded by young attendants within a tranquil willow grove. This scene represents Tao Qian (365-472), also known as Tao Yuanming's country retreat. Nagasawa Rosetsu, an esteemed Japanese artist from the same era (1754-1799), skillfully captured these scenes on this magnificent piece of art. The intention behind this creation was to depict both poets' reclusive lives and their deep connection with nature. With its rich history and intricate details, this print transports viewers back in time to appreciate the beauty and significance of Chinese literati culture during Japan's Edo period.
