EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "A Graceful Leap: The Euphrates Jerboa (Allactaga euphratica), an Agile Mammal of the Asian Deserts" This exquisite watercolor drawing by Olivia Fanny Tonge captures the essence of the Euphrates Jerboa (Allactaga euphratica), an enchanting and agile mammal native to the deserts of Central Asia. Tonge's meticulous attention to detail brings out the intricacies of this elusive creature's anatomy, from its distinctive long ears to its slender limbs, perfectly poised for a leap. The Euphrates Jerboa, also known as the Afghan Jerboa, is a small mammal belonging to the Dipodidae family, which includes jerboas and jumping mice. They are part of the larger order Rodentia, and their scientific name, Allactaga euphratica, reflects their classification within the suborders Myomorpha (mouse-like rodents) and Dipodoidea (jumping rodents). This drawing showcases the jerboa's remarkable ability to jump long distances, a trait that helps them evade predators in their arid habitat. The Euphrates Jerboa is also an eutherian mammal, meaning it is warm-blooded and nourishes its young with milk. In the background, Tonge has artfully depicted a flowering plant, possibly an angiosperm, adding a touch of life and color to the desert landscape. The presence of flowers signifies the importance of these plants in providing sustenance for the jerboa and other desert inhabitants. This drawing is one of sixteen sketchbooks presented to the Natural History Museum in London in 1952. Olivia Fanny Tonge's dedication to capturing the natural world in her illustrations has left us with a beautiful record of the Euphrates Jerboa and its desert habitat.
