EDITORS COMMENTS
Anthony Hamilton, 1st Earl of Middleton and 1st Count of Grammont (1646-1720), was a prominent Scottish peer and author who spent the latter part of his life in France. Born in Scotland, Hamilton rose through the ranks of the Scottish court under the reign of King Charles II, serving as Lord Advocate and Lord Chancellor. However, following the Glorious Revolution of 1688, Hamilton went into exile in France, where he was granted the title of Count of Grammont by King Louis XIV. In France, Hamilton became a prolific writer, penning a number of works on history and politics. His most famous work, "Memoirs of the Earl of Grammont," provides a firsthand account of Scottish and European political events during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. The memoirs offer valuable insights into the political intrigues and power struggles of the time, as well as Hamilton's own experiences as a Scottish exile in France. Despite his Scottish heritage and long years in exile, Hamilton remained deeply committed to Scotland and its interests. He continued to correspond with Scottish politicians and played a role in Scottish politics from afar. His memoirs remain an important source for historians studying this period of Scottish and European history. This portrait of Anthony Hamilton, 1st Count of Grammont, captures the distinguished and intellectual air of the Scottish peer. Dressed in the robes of a count, Hamilton gazes intently at the viewer, his expression suggesting a man of great intelligence and determination. The portrait underscores Hamilton's status as a Scottish peer living in exile in France, a man who continued to shape Scottish and European history from afar.
