EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a pivotal moment from the 1930 production of 'The Barretts of Wimpole Street' by Rudolf Besier. The scene takes place in the Barrett family home, where Elizabeth Barrett (dressed in a beautiful blue crinoline gown) looks on in despair as her controlling father, Thomas Barrett (not depicted in the image), throws Henrietta Barrett to the ground in a fit of rage. Henrietta's crime? Loving a man of her own choosing, Robert Browning, against her father's wishes. This incident, depicted in Act IV, ultimately leads Elizabeth to make the bold decision to elope with Browning. The production of 'The Barretts of Wimpole Street' premiered at the Malvern Festival in August 1930, before transferring to the Queens Theatre in London in September of the same year. The photograph is believed to have been taken during the touring production of the play to the Opera House in Cork, around 1933. The image showcases the intricate details of the Victorian-era setting, with its grand windows, ornate drawing room, and the dimly lit stage. The photograph offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to the 19th century and the tumultuous world of the Barrett family.
