EDITORS COMMENTS
Plate 77 from John Gould's The Birds of Great Britain, Volume 5 (1873) presents a stunning and intricately detailed hand-coloured lithograph of the Whiskered Tern, or Chlidonias hybrida. This beautiful avian species, a member of the Laridae family and the Charadriiformes order, is depicted in the image as a pair, perched outside on a rocky shore during daytime. The Whiskered Tern is easily recognizable by its distinctive long, red, and slightly downcurved bill, which is used for both capturing prey and communicating with other members of its species. The birds' grey plumage, with white underparts and wings, is also clearly visible in the illustration. The terns' whiskers, which are actually elongated feathers on the sides of their faces, are also prominently featured in the image. John Gould's The Birds of Great Britain was a groundbreaking work in ornithological illustration, produced between 1832 and 1837. The series consisted of 300 hand-coloured lithographs, each meticulously created by a team of skilled artists and colourists. The plates were originally intended for private collectors and scientific institutions, and were considered to be of the highest quality in terms of both artistic merit and scientific accuracy. This particular image of the Whiskered Tern is a testament to the extraordinary skill and dedication of the team behind The Birds of Great Britain. The intricate details of the terns' plumage, the subtle shading and highlighting, and the lifelike quality of the birds' expressions all combine to create a captivating and enduring work of art. The image invites us to appreciate the beauty and diversity of the natural world, and to marvel at the intricacies of the avian species that inhabit it.
