EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases a selection of tomb equipment belonging to the ancient Egyptian official, Gemniemhat, discovered at the Saqqara necropolis around 1990 BC during the Middle Kingdom period. The Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek in Copenhagen, Denmark, is the current home of these precious antiquities. The image reveals an array of funerary objects that would have been essential for the afterlife of Gemniemhat. Among these objects are several amulets and amulet bears, designed to protect the deceased in the afterlife. Notable among these are the cross-shaped amulet and the pectoral, both adorned with intricate hieroglyphics and symbols. A granary, likely used to provide sustenance for the deceased, is also depicted, as well as a boat, complete with oars and an oarsman, symbolizing the journey to the afterlife. The tomb equipment also includes a headrest, sandals, and various pieces of jewelry, such as a necklace and a pair of sandals. Additionally, there are several statuettes and statues, including a statuette of an offering bearer and a statuette of a trousseau bearer, which would have held the deceased's clothing and personal belongings. A throwing stick and a pair of oars are also present, possibly representing activities that Gemniemhat enjoyed in life or in the afterlife. These objects provide a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of ancient Egyptian civilization and the beliefs and practices surrounding death and the afterlife during the Middle Kingdom period.
