This exquisite handcolored engraving on steel depicts a Fennec fox, Vulpes zerda, a small nocturnal mammal native to the desert regions of North Africa. The engraving is taken from a drawing by Colonel Charles Hamilton Smith, and was published as part of Sir William Jardine's Naturalist's Library: Dogs, published by W.H. Lizars in Edinburgh in 1839.
