EDITORS COMMENTS
The Golden Bough: A Focal Point of Roman Belief (circa 1890s, Mary Evans Picture Library, from Mary Evans Prints Online) This evocative image depicts the legendary Golden Bough, a significant symbol of Roman mythology and belief. The Golden Bough, as described in Virgil's epic poem, the Aeneid, was a sacred branch that Aeneas, the legendary Trojan hero, discovered in the grove of the goddess Diana at Lake Nemi. According to the myth, Aeneas was instructed by the Sybil, the priestess of Delphi, to seize the Golden Bough from the sacred grove as a sign of his divine right to rule. The Golden Bough held deep symbolism for the ancient Romans, representing renewal, rebirth, and the power of the gods. It was believed that the king of the grove, the Aricinus, was reincarnated every ten years, and the new king was required to seize the Golden Bough from the previous king, who would then die. This ritual ensured the continuity of the king's power and the renewal of the sacred grove. Sir James Frazer, a renowned Scottish anthropologist and historian, explored the significance of the Golden Bough in great depth in his multi-volumed investigation, "The Golden Bough: A Study in Magic and Religion." Frazer's work, first published in 1890, delved into the historical and mythological origins of the Golden Bough and its connection to various other myths and rituals from around the world. This photograph, taken in the late 1890s, captures the timeless allure of the Golden Bough and the rich history it represents. The golden hue of the bough and the intricate details of its leaves and branches add to the mystique and magic of this ancient Roman symbol.
