EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures Francis, Duke of Teck (1837-1900), a prominent figure in late Victorian royal history. Born as Franz Ferdinand Adalbert, he was a member of the German House of Württemberg and held the German titles of Count of Hohenstein (Graf von Hohenstein) and later Duke of Teck (Herzog von Teck). In 1866, he married Princess Mary Adelaide of Cambridge, making him the father of Queen Mary, the consort of King George V. The Duke's regal bearing and distinctive moustache are evident in this image, taken during the late 19th century. His German heritage added an international dimension to the British Royal Family, making him a subject of both fascination and controversy. Despite his German background, he was deeply loyal to the British crown and played an active role in public life, serving as a colonel in the British Army and attending state functions. Francis, Duke of Teck, was a man of great dignity and grace, who navigated the complexities of royal life with poise and diplomacy. His legacy as a devoted father and a loyal member of the British Royal Family endures to this day, making him an intriguing figure in the annals of royal history.
