EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving, created between 1816 and 1830, features two captivating bird species: the Great Kiskadee (Pitangus sulphuratus) and the Asian Paradise Flycatcher (Terpsiphone paradisi). The illustration is taken from the "Dictionnaire de Sciences Naturelles: Ornithologie" by Frederic Cuvier, with paintings by Jean Gabriel Pretre and engraving by Guyard, under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, and published by F.G. Levrault in Paris, France. Jean Gabriel Pretre (1780-1845) was a renowned painter of natural history, having worked at Empress Josephine's zoo before becoming the artist to the Museum of Natural History. In this exquisite piece, Pretre masterfully captures the intricate details and vibrant colors of both birds. The Great Kiskadee, also known as the Kikiwi or the Lourie, is a New World flycatcher native to Central and South America. With its distinctive crest, black mask, and long, curved bill, this bird is a striking presence in its habitat. The Asian Paradise Flycatcher, on the other hand, is a bird native to Southeast Asia. The male is adorned with long, colorful plumes, making it an alluring sight in the forests of its region. The female, however, is less colorful and more subtly patterned. This engraving not only showcases the beauty of these birds but also provides a glimpse into the rich history of natural science illustration. The meticulous attention to detail and the vibrant colors make this a truly remarkable piece that continues to inspire and delight.
