EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the quiet vigilance of Private P.J. Hill, a soldier of the D Company, 20th Battalion, The County of London Regiment, as he stands duty in the guard room at Oakwood Beckenham during the First World War. The year was 1895, and though the image was taken decades before the outbreak of the conflict, the image of a lone sentinel in a dimly lit room is a common one from the era. Private Hill, a local Londoner who studied at the Lambeth School of Art in St. Oswalds Place, Upper Kennington Lane, can be seen wearing the distinctive uniform of his regiment, complete with forage cap and rifle slung over his shoulder. The guard room, with its worn wooden floorboards and dimly lit oil lamp, speaks of long hours spent on sentry duty. The County of London Regiment, also known as the "London Regiment," was a part of the British Army's Territorial Force. The regiment was formed in 1908 and saw action in both World War I and World War II. The image of Private Hill on duty serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by ordinary men and women during these conflicts. This photograph, with its historical significance and topographical detail, is an invaluable addition to any collection of military history or WWI memorabilia. The image is not to be used for commercial purposes and is available for rights-managed licensing only through Mary Evans Picture Library.
