EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures Emperor Haile Selassie I of Ethiopia (1892-1975) on his horse during the coronation ceremony held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on November 2, 1930. Haile Selassie, whose name translates to "Power of the Trinity," ascended to the throne following the death of his father, Ras Tafari Kadamawi. His reign, which lasted until his overthrow in 1974, is considered a golden age in Ethiopian history. Haile Selassie's coronation was a grand affair, attended by thousands of Ethiopians and dignitaries from around the world. The emperor wore the traditional Ethiopian imperial robes, adorned with gold and precious stones, and a crown made of solid gold. He rode a white horse, symbolizing power and strength, as he was officially proclaimed the ruler of Ethiopia. This photograph, taken in 1936, shows Haile Selassie in his regal attire, seated confidently on his horse, surrounded by his soldiers and officials. The image exudes a sense of pride and majesty, reflecting the emperor's strong leadership and commitment to preserving Ethiopia's rich cultural heritage. Haile Selassie's reign was marked by modernization efforts, including the establishment of schools, hospitals, and infrastructure projects. He also played a significant role in international diplomacy, advocating for Ethiopia's sovereignty and independence on the global stage. Despite facing numerous challenges, including invasions by Italian and Derg forces, Haile Selassie remained a symbol of resilience and hope for the Ethiopian people. This photograph serves as a powerful reminder of his legacy and the enduring spirit of Ethiopia.
