EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, Hans Heinrich XVII, the 4th Prince of Pless, is depicted as a young and energetic child during a stag-shooting excursion at Promnitz in the year 1912. The image captures a moment of pure joy and excitement as the future prince, dressed in hunting attire, rides on horseback with a determined look in his eyes, holding a rifle at the ready. Born on October 13, 1900, Hans Heinrich XVII was the eldest son of Hans Heinrich XV von Hochberg and his wife, Mary Theresa Olivia Cornwallis-West, a renowned English society beauty. The prince's parents' marriage was an unusual one, as Mary Theresa was an Englishwoman, and her husband was a German prince. However, their union was blessed with five children, and Hans Heinrich XVII was the firstborn. The photograph was taken during the Edwardian era, a time of grandeur and elegance, when hunting was a popular pastime among the European aristocracy. The setting of the image, with its rolling hills, dense forests, and picturesque landscape, further emphasizes the idyllic and privileged lifestyle of the royal family. Despite the challenges that came with being a German prince with an English mother during the turbulent early 20th century, Hans Heinrich XVII grew up to become a respected and influential figure in German society. He served in the German military during World War II and was later involved in various diplomatic missions. The prince passed away on February 2, 1984, leaving behind a rich legacy as a devoted family man, a successful businessman, and a proud representative of his noble heritage. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of his youthful exuberance and the privileged upbringing that shaped his life.
