EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the moment of historical significance as HMS Comus, a C-class light cruiser of the Royal Navy, was left behind in Istanbul, Turkey, in August 1923. The British Mediterranean Fleet, including the HMS Marlborough from which this image was taken, had departed, marking the final withdrawal of Allied occupation armies from Anatolia. The Allied Powers were transferring control of the city to the Nationalists, as signified by the handover ceremony taking place at the Dolmabahce Palace. The distinctive Istanbul skyline can be seen in the background, providing a sense of the end of an era. The 1920s were a pivotal time in Turkish history, as the country transitioned from Ottoman rule to a modern, secular state. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the British presence in Istanbul during that period and the eventual relinquishment of control. The C-class HMS Comus, with its proud silhouette, stands as a testament to the rich history and cultural exchange that occurred between Turkey and the Allied Powers during this time.
