EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-coloured engraving depicts the Annulated Sea Snake, Hydrophis cyanocinctus, a striking and venomous reptile native to the waters of the Indian and Pacific Oceans, including the coasts of Australia and New Zealand. The snake's body is adorned with alternating blue and white rings, earning it the common name "annulated." The Annulated Sea Snake is a member of the Hydrophiidae family, which is part of the larger group of Hydrophiinae, or true sea snakes. The engraving is taken from "An Account of Indian Serpents collected on the coast of Coromandel," a natural history publication by Patrick Russell, a Scottish surgeon and naturalist, published in 1796. Russell's collection, known as The Patrick Russell Collection, is an important historical record of the reptiles of India and its surrounding regions. The Annulated Sea Snake is a diapsid reptile, meaning it has two openings, or diapsids, in the back of its skull. It is also a member of the larger group Sauropsida, which includes all living reptiles and their extinct ancestors. The snake is a member of the Squamata order, which includes scaled reptiles, and the suborder Serpentes, or snakes. The Annulated Sea Snake is a highly adapted marine reptile, with paddle-like tail and webbed feet, allowing it to swim efficiently in the open ocean. It feeds primarily on fish and eels, and is itself preyed upon by larger marine animals such as sharks and dolphins. This engraving provides a fascinating glimpse into the natural history of the Annulated Sea Snake and the broader biodiversity of the Indian Ocean region during the late 18th century.
