EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning woodblock print captures the dramatic moment from the classic Japanese kabuki play "Fuwa no Banzaemon Yukari no Matsu" (The Pine Tree of Fuwa no Banzaemon), featuring the renowned actors Ichikawa Yaozo III as Fuwa no Banzaemon and Sakata Hangoro III as Kosodate no Kannonbo. The play, which premiered around 1795, tells the story of the loyal retainer Fuwa no Banzaemon, who, after being falsely accused of treason, is forced to go into hiding. He disguises himself as a woman and, with the help of Kannonbo, a priestess, manages to clear his name and restore his honor. The intricately designed print showcases the actors in their respective roles, with Fuwa no Banzaemon depicted in a graceful, feminine pose as he hides his true identity, while Kosodate no Kannonbo, with a serious expression, supports and protects him. The detailed woodcut background, with its lush greenery and ornate architecture, further enhances the theatrical atmosphere. Ichikawa Yaozo III and Sakata Hangoro III were two of the most celebrated actors of their time, known for their exceptional talent and dedication to the art of kabuki. The print not only serves as a testament to their acting prowess but also provides a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage and storytelling traditions of Japan during the late Edo period.
