VISUAL DESCRIPTION
This is a vintage black and white photograph from "The Sketch Supplement" dated April 14, 1897. The image features two separate full-length portraits of individuals in theatrical costumes, presented side by side within an ornate border. On the left, there's a person dressed as what appears to be a classic circus ringmaster or performer, complete with a decorative hat that resembles a turban adorned with plumes or feathers. They are wearing striped pants and a jacket with fur trimmings on the shoulders and cuffs. This individual holds what seems like a whip in their right hand while striking an authoritative pose indicative of someone commanding attention or performing. To the right stands another figure dressed in domestic attire suggestive of late 19th-century fashion for women working at home. She wears an ankle-length dress with puffed sleeves and an apron over it. Her hair seems disheveled, suggesting she might be portraying a character who has been engaged in vigorous activity or one representing comedic relief through exaggeration of household chores. In her arms is held what looks like either laundry or possibly even some sort of puppet resembling seals (as suggested by the caption), which aligns with her being labeled as "Terror of the Tub." Above these images is the title "TAMER OF SEALS; AND TERROR OF THE TUB," indicating that these characters may represent personalities from performance art such as theatre or vaudeville acts known during that era—a tamer showcasing control over animals (in this case seals) and perhaps another character humorously struggling with washing tub activities. Below the photographs, there's text partially visible due to cropping but it references Mr. Herbert Campbell & Miss Harriett Vernon 'In Flotsam And Jetsam' at The Empire Theatre London - giving context to these being promotional images for performers likely involved in this specific production at mentioned venue.
