EDITORS COMMENTS
John of God, also known as Juan de Dios or Giovanni di Dio, was a Portuguese religious figure born in Montemor-o-Novo, Alentejo region, in the 16th century. He is best remembered for founding the Brothers Hospitallers of St. John of God, an order dedicated to the care of the poor, the sick, and the abandoned. Born into a noble family, John of God experienced a profound spiritual awakening in his youth, leading him to abandon his worldly possessions and devote himself to serving the needy. He began his ministry by caring for the sick in the streets of Seville, Spain, and soon attracted a following of like-minded individuals who joined him in his mission. The Brothers Hospitallers of St. John of God grew rapidly, and they established hospitals and infirmaries throughout Europe. John of God's charismatic personality and deep spirituality inspired countless people, and he was canonized as a saint by the Catholic Church in 1622.
