EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured front piece is taken from John Lettsom's "Natural History of the Tea Tree," published in 1791. The illustration, held in the esteemed Botany Library at the Natural History Museum in London, offers a detailed and accurate representation of the tea plant, Camellia sinensis, a member of the Myrtaceae family within the larger grouping of angiosperms, dicotyledons, or flowering plants. The painting showcases the intricate details of the tea plant's leaves, flowers, and stems, with the leafy branches bearing small, white flowers in the foreground. The tea plant is an evergreen shrub native to East Asia and is now cultivated in various regions worldwide for its leaves, which are used to produce tea. The illustration is part of the Eudicot clade, specifically the Rosid and Asterid subclasses. The Rosids include the Malvidae family, to which the Camellieae, the subfamily that includes Camellia sinensis, belongs. The painting also belongs to the order Ericales, which includes the Myrtales order, to which the Myrtaceae family, and thus the tea plant, belongs. John Coakley Lettsom, the author and illustrator of this natural history work, was a prominent figure in the field of botany during the late 18th century. His meticulous and detailed illustrations were widely used in scientific research and helped advance the understanding of various plant species, including the tea plant. This coloured piece is a testament to Lettsom's dedication to botanical accuracy and serves as a reminder of the rich history of botanical illustration and its importance in the study of natural history.
