EDITORS COMMENTS
This image captures the heroic moment when Count Jean Baptiste Aubert Le Capne, a renowned French naval officer, rescued the crew of the stricken American brig Lydia in the late 1830s. The Lydia, an American trading vessel, was caught in a violent storm in the Atlantic Ocean, and as the ship began to sink, the crew abandoned ship, clinging to the few remaining lifeboats. Count Le Capne, who was sailing nearby in his own vessel, quickly responded to the distress call. Braving the treacherous waves and winds, he and his crew managed to save the lives of all 35 men aboard the Lydia. In this photograph, Count Le Capne is depicted in the act of pulling a crew member aboard his ship, his determination and strength evident in his posture. The American brig Lydia, now a mere shadow on the water, can be seen sinking in the background. Count Le Capne, a native of Caen, France, was a decorated naval officer who had served in the French Navy for many years. His bravery and quick thinking saved the lives of the Lydia's crew, making this a significant moment in maritime history. This photograph is a testament to the courage and selflessness of Count Le Capne and his crew, and serves as a reminder of the importance of solidarity and cooperation in times of crisis.
