EDITORS COMMENTS
This print tells the legendary tale of the Blessed Virgin Mary's intervention in the historic battle of Granada, Spain, in 1492. The image portrays Queen Isabella I of Castile leading her army towards the fortress of Granada, determined to defeat the Moorish king, Boabdil. The Moorish king, depicted in the bottom right corner, is shown in a state of terror as he gazes into the abyss, symbolizing his imminent defeat and the end of Muslim rule in Spain. The story goes that before the battle, Queen Isabella made a vow to the Virgin Mary, promising to build a monastery in her honor if she granted them victory. True to her word, after the successful conquest of Granada, the queen ordered the construction of the Monastery of Santa Maria de la Victoria in Granada, which became a symbol of the Christian Reconquista and the unification of Spain. This powerful image encapsulates the spirit of faith, determination, and triumph that characterized the Spanish people during this pivotal moment in history. The legend of the Blessed Virgin Mary's role in the victory of Granada has been passed down through generations, inspiring awe and reverence for the divine intervention that played a crucial part in shaping the course of Spanish history.
