EDITORS COMMENTS
In the 1990s, the London Fire Brigade (LFB) introduced a new generation of Heavy Rescue Tenders to its fleet, replacing the older models with more advanced and versatile vehicles. The Heavy Rescue Unit, as depicted in this photograph, was one such appliance. Equipped with a comprehensive range of cutting and spreading equipment, a larger crew, breathing apparatus, and chemical protection suits, this vehicle was designed to tackle the most complex and challenging rescue missions. The open compartments on the side of the Heavy Rescue Unit showcase the array of tools and equipment stored inside. The hydraulic cutting equipment, including the Jaws of Life, is visible, along with various spreading tools, such as the Combi-Tool and the Spreader. The breathing apparatus and chemical protection suits are also easily accessible, ensuring that the firefighters on board have quick access to the necessary equipment to carry out their duties safely and effectively. In contrast to the Heavy Rescue Unit, the LFB also introduced Light Rescue Units during the same period. These units carried lifting and spreading equipment but did not have the same extensive range of tools and a smaller crew. The Heavy Rescue Unit, however, was the go-to appliance for larger and more complex rescues, making it an essential addition to the LFB's fleet during the 1990s. This photograph captures a moment in time, showcasing the advanced equipment and capabilities of the London Fire Brigade's Heavy Rescue Unit during the 1990s. The red and yellow vehicle, with its open compartments revealing the tools of the trade, stands ready for action, embodying the bravery and dedication of the firefighters who operate it.
