EDITORS COMMENTS
This memorial card pays tribute to Umberto I, the revered King of Italy from 1878 until his untimely death in 1900. Born on October 14, 1844, in Turin, Italy, Umberto ascended to the throne following the assassination of his father, King Victor Emmanuel II. During his reign, Umberto worked diligently to strengthen Italy's position on the world stage. The card's intricate design features an image of the monarch wearing the crown of the Two Sicilies, symbolizing his claim to the southern Italian kingdom. Umberto's title, "King of Italy and Emperor of Ethiopia," is inscribed below, reflecting his territorial expansion through the colonization of Ethiopia. Umberto's achievements extended beyond territorial expansion. He played a significant role in the establishment of the Triple Alliance between Italy, Germany, and Austria-Hungary in 1882, which aimed to counterbalance the power of France. Additionally, he supported the arts and sciences, founding the National Museum of Ancient Art in Rome and the National Museum of Prehistory and Ethnography in Florence. The card's sepia tone and ornate detailing convey a sense of solemnity and reverence, reflecting the profound impact Umberto had on Italian history. The date "September 16, 1900" is inscribed at the bottom, marking the anniversary of his death. This memorial card serves as a poignant reminder of Umberto I's legacy as a respected and influential leader in the late 19th century.
