EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured steel engraving depicts Angostura trifoliata, also known as Cusparia febrifuga and Angusture, a medicinal plant native to the tropical regions of South America. The image is based on a botanical illustration by Edouard Maubert, which was published as part of Pierre Oscar Reveil's Flore Medicale, a comprehensive work on medicinal plants, between 1864 and 1871. The engraving, executed by Lagesse, captures the intricate details of the plant's bark, leaves, and flowers. Angostura trifoliata is a small tree or shrub that grows up to 10 meters tall, with trifoliate leaves and small, white or pink flowers. The plant is named for its native region, Angostura, which is now known as Venezuela. Angostura trifoliata has been used traditionally in South American folk medicine for the treatment of fever, malaria, and other ailments. The bark of the tree is rich in quinine, a compound that has been used for centuries to treat malaria. The plant's medicinal properties were well-known to the indigenous peoples of the region, who used it to make a tea or decoction to treat fever and other illnesses. The botanical illustration and engraving were produced during a time when Europeans were exploring the New World and discovering new medicinal plants. The publication of works like Flore Medicale helped to disseminate knowledge about these plants and their medicinal properties, contributing to the development of modern pharmacology and medicine.
