EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving depicts Annual Honesty, Lunaria annua, also known as Narrow-leaved Lungwort, Blue Cowslip, or Monetaria. The illustration is taken from Jussieus Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, a comprehensive Dictionary of Natural Sciences published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The meticulously detailed image was engraved by Cellai, with drawings by Jean Gabriel Pretre and direction by Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin. Turpin, a French botanical illustrator of the 19th century, is renowned for his exceptional botanical works. Annual Honesty is a herbaceous plant that grows to about 30 cm tall. Its narrow, lanceolate leaves are covered in small, blue-purple spots, giving the plant an attractive, speckled appearance. The plant produces small, pink or purple flowers in late spring, which develop into distinctive, flat, kidney-shaped seed pods. These seed pods, with their intricate, silver-blue veining, are the source of the plant's common name, 'Annual Honesty.' The history of Annual Honesty dates back to ancient times, with records of its use as a medicinal plant and as an edible vegetable. In Europe, it was traditionally used to treat respiratory ailments, hence its alternative name, Lungwort. Today, it is grown primarily for its ornamental value and is a popular addition to rock gardens and borders due to its attractive foliage and unique seed pods. This beautiful and intricate engraving is a testament to the artistry and scientific precision of the time, providing a fascinating glimpse into the natural world and the botanical knowledge of the 19th century.
