EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured lithograph depicts the Black Oak tree, Quercus velutina, also known as the yellow-barked oak or quercitron. The image is based on a botanical illustration by David Blair and was published in Robert Bentley and Henry Trimen's Medicinal Plants, a comprehensive work on the medicinal properties of various plants, published in London in 1880. The Black Oak is a majestic tree native to North America, growing up to 30 meters tall with a broad, spreading crown. Its bark is characterized by its dark, almost black color, giving the tree its common name. However, as shown in this illustration, the bark of young trees can exhibit a yellow hue, earning it the alternative name quercitron. The acorns of the Black Oak are a rich source of food for wildlife, particularly for squirrels and other animals. The tree also plays an important role in the ecosystem, providing habitat for various insects, birds, and mammals. The Black Oak has a long history of medicinal use. Indigenous peoples in North America used the bark to make a red dye, while European settlers used it to make a yellow dye, known as quercitron. The inner bark was also used to make a decoction that was used to treat diarrhea, dysentery, and other gastrointestinal disorders. This beautiful lithograph is a testament to the intricate detail and artistry of botanical illustration during the late 19th century. It provides a glimpse into the natural world and the rich knowledge of medicinal plants that was passed down through generations.
