EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving, titled "Coral Clinging Crab, Arrow Crab, and Leach's Spider Crab," is a beautiful example of the naturalistic illustrations found in Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's "Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali," or "Dictionary of Natural Science," published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was engraved by Stanghi, drawn by Jean Gabriel Pretre, and directed by Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, one of the greatest French botanical illustrators of the 19th century. The engraving depicts three different types of crabs: the coral clinging crab (Mithrax hispidus), the arrow crab (Stenorhynchus lanceolatus), and the Leach's spider crab (Inachus phalangium). The coral clinging crab is shown clinging to a coral reef, its long legs and pincers perfectly adapted for its environment. The arrow crab is named for its distinctive arrow-shaped claws, while the Leach's spider crab is characterized by its long, spindly legs and large, spider-like pincers. The background of the illustration features various corals, including Rajania margini spinosa and Pattolo di Bosc, as well as a Macropodia tree and Raiane cordata. The intricate detail and lifelike quality of the illustration are a testament to the skill of the artists and the advanced techniques of the time. The use of hand-coloring adds an additional layer of beauty and realism to the image. This engraving is not only a work of art but also an important historical document, providing a record of the natural world as it was known in the early 19th century. It is a reminder of the beauty and diversity of the marine environment and the importance of preserving and studying it for future generations.
