EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, taken on June 24, 1930, we find the pioneering team of Captain Charles Kingsford Smith, co-pilot Evert van Dijk, navigator John Patrick (Paddy) Saul, and wireless operator John Stannage, standing proudly next to their aircraft, the Southern Cross (VH-USU. This momentous occasion marks the first fully successful westbound transatlantic flight from Europe to North America. The flight originated from Portmarnock Beach, near Dublin, Ireland, and concluded at Harbour Grace, Newfoundland, covering a distance of 1,900 miles. The audacious quartet braved the treacherous North Atlantic waters for 31 hours and 30 minutes, shattering the records and proving that long-distance, non-stop transatlantic flights were indeed possible. The Southern Cross, a Fokker Trimotor monoplane, was equipped with advanced navigation and communication systems, enabling the team to overcome the challenges of navigating the vast, unpredictable ocean. Captain Charles Kingsford Smith, an Australian aviator, had already made history by completing the first eastbound transatlantic flight in 1928. With this westbound achievement, he further cemented his place in aviation history. Co-pilot Evert van Dijk, navigator Paddy Saul, and wireless operator John Stannage were integral members of the team, their expertise and dedication playing a crucial role in the success of the mission. This photograph captures the spirit of adventure and innovation that defined the early days of aviation. The pioneering efforts of these men opened up new possibilities for commercial and military aviation, paving the way for the modern era of air travel.
