This handcoloured lithograph showcases the renowned French singer, Jean-Baptiste Chollet, in his leading role as Cagliostro in the comic opera of the same name. The production was staged at the Théâtre Royal de l'Opéra Comique in Paris during 1844. The opera, composed by Adolphe Adam, Henri Vernoy de Saint-Georges, and Eugène Scribe, was a collaboration between some of the most prominent figures in French theatre and music at the time. Jean-Baptiste Chollet (1810-1865) was a celebrated tenor, known for his exceptional vocal abilities and captivating stage presence. In the role of Cagliostro, he donned an elaborate costume designed by Alexandre Lacauchie and brought the enigmatic character to life, as depicted in this stunning illustration by Victor Dollet.
