At the time, Lucien Hector Jonas, a renowned military painter, had been officially accredited as the military painter to the Musée de l'Armée in Paris. Jonas, born in 1880, was a prolific artist who traveled extensively along all sections of the front lines, producing thousands of drawings, oil paintings, charcoals, sketches, and illustrations of various kinds. Jonas was not only known for his battle scenes but also for his portraits of military leaders and soldiers in various national uniforms. In February 1915, he was granted access to the French military, enabling him to document the war in a unique and intimate way.
