EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant photograph captures a group of German Macedonian gipsies, also known as Sinti or Roma, who were living in Britain in the early 1900s. The image, taken in 1905, shows the gipsies huddled together on the back of a cart, their belongings piled high around them. Their faces express a range of emotions, from sadness and exhaustion to determination and resilience. At the time, the British authorities were increasingly intolerant of the gipsy community, viewing them as a source of social unrest and criminal activity. As a result, the gipsies were subjected to repeated evictions and were often forced to leave the country. In this case, the group in the photograph was among those who were deported back to Germany. The gipsies had a long history of migration, having been displaced from their homelands in Europe over centuries. Many had sought refuge in Britain, where they had lived for generations. But the anti-gipsy sentiment of the time made their existence precarious, and they were often subjected to discrimination and persecution. Despite the challenges they faced, the gipsies continued to travel from place to place, maintaining their unique culture and traditions. This photograph serves as a reminder of their resilience and the difficult history of the gipsy community in Europe.
