This chromolithograph showcases a pair of Golden-pencilled Hamburghs, a breed of domestic fowl that was the epitome of Victorian poultry fashion. The proud cock and hen, with their rich golden-pencilled plumage, were bred by the renowned poultry fancier Henry Beldon and were the cup winners at the Crystal Palace exhibition in 1871. The image, an intricately detailed illustration by J.W. Ludlow, was published in Lewis Wright's The Illustrated Book of Poultry, a popular ornithological publication by Cassell, London, in 1890. The Golden-pencilled Hamburghs were a popular breed during the poultry craze of the late 19th century, when showing and breeding birds was a popular pastime for the affluent. The exotic and elaborate plumage of these birds was much admired, and they were often displayed at agricultural shows and competitions. Despite their ornamental appearance, the Hamburghs were also used for game and were known for their excellent laying abilities. The breed's popularity led to the establishment of specialized poultry shows, such as the Barnstaple Poultry Show in 1871 and 1872, where the finest specimens were exhibited and judged.
