EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving by Antonio Sasso, taken from Giulio Ferrario's seminal work "Ancient and Modern Costumes of all the Peoples of the World," published in Florence, Italy, in 1843, offers a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the extinct Gonaqua people, who once inhabited the south coast of Africa between Algoa Bay and the Mbhashe River. The image showcases the distinctive attire of these Khoikhoi people, who are also known as the Hottentots. The men in this illustration are depicted wearing fur capes and hats, which provided protection against the harsh African climate. Their bodies are adorned with intricately beaded aprons and necklaces, which were not only decorative but also served as a form of identification and social status. The Gonaqua people were skilled hunters and farmers, and they are often depicted in historical records with their traditional weapons, such as bows and arrows, and spears. The man in the foreground of this image holds a spear in one hand and a quiver of arrows in the other, while the man in the background wears a bow slung over his shoulder. The intricate details of this engraving, from the textures of the fur capes to the intricate beadwork on the aprons and necklaces, offer a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of the Gonaqua people. Unfortunately, this once vibrant community is now extinct, and their history and traditions have largely been lost to time. This image serves as a poignant reminder of the diverse and fascinating peoples who have inhabited Africa throughout history.
