EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking 17th century copperplate engraving, Holy Roman Emperor Frederick III, also known as Frederick the Small or Frederick of the Palatinate, is depicted holding the imperial orb and a Bible. Born in 1415, Frederick was the Elector Palatine of the Rhine and the last male member of the Wittelsbach dynasty to rule the Palatinate. In 1442, he was elected King of the Romans, and in 1452, he was crowned Holy Roman Emperor. Frederick's imperial reign was marked by his efforts to strengthen the position of the emperor within the complex system of the Holy Roman Empire. He sought to assert his authority over the various princes and electors, and to promote unity and order within the empire. This was reflected in his use of the imperial insignia, such as the orb and the imperial crown, which symbolized his divine right to rule. The engraving, created by Abraham Bogaerts for the work "De Roomsche Monarchy" (The Roman Monarchy) by Francois Salma, published in Utrecht in 1697, presents a classical portrait of Frederick. He is shown wearing the imperial crown, a token of his imperial status, and holding the orb, which represents the earthly power of the emperor. The Bible in his other hand symbolizes his spiritual authority and his role as the "defender of the faith." The image of Frederick with the imperial insignia and the Bible was a common representation of Holy Roman Emperors and Roman Caesars, emphasizing their dual role as temporal and spiritual rulers. The engraving is a testament to the enduring symbolism and power of imperial imagery in the Holy Roman Empire and beyond.
