EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the interior of the Sardinian Chapel of Lincoln's Inn, London, as it appeared in 1906. The Roman Catholic chapel, dedicated to Our Lady of Sardinia, was a cherished place of worship for the Italian community in the heart of the city. The chapel's ornate decor and intricately carved wooden altar are highlighted by the soft, natural light filtering in through the stained glass windows. The centerpiece of the chapel is the impressive organ, which was a testament to the chapel's commitment to music and liturgy. The organ was a source of great pride for the community, and it is believed that many of London's most renowned organists performed there. Sadly, the Sardinian Chapel was demolished in the early 1900s to make way for the new Kingsway thoroughfare. The loss of the chapel was deeply felt by the Italian community, and efforts to save it were unsuccessful. The new church that was eventually built on the site, fronting onto Kingsway, could not replicate the unique character and history of the Sardinian Chapel. This photograph is a poignant reminder of a bygone era and a place of worship that was once an integral part of London's rich cultural heritage. The intricate details of the chapel's interior, from the ornate carvings to the beautiful stained glass windows, are preserved in this image for future generations to appreciate.
