EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in 1904, features Isobel Violet Hunt (1862-1942), a renowned British author and literary hostess. Known for her feminist novels and activism, Hunt was a pioneering figure in women's rights, founding the Women Writers Suffrage League in 1908 and participating in the establishment of International PEN. The image, published in the Tatler as part of a series on contemporary literary figures, captures Hunt in her home, surrounded by the artistic tastes of the Edwardian era. The room's decor is adorned with a William Morris Daisy wallpaper above the picture rail, reflecting the tasteful and textured interior décor of the time. Hunt sits in an armchair by the fireplace, her expression thoughtful and contemplative. However, it is the cat perched on the mantelpiece that steals the show. Its surprised expression, captured by the photographer, adds a playful and unexpected element to the image. The cat's black fur contrasts with the intricate patterns of the wallpaper and the warm tones of the room, adding an element of whimsy and charm to the portrait of this influential and trailblazing woman.
