EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait captures Lady Francis Hope, nee May Yohe (1866-1938), in the prime of her life during the Edwardian era. Known for her successful acting career on the London stage, Yohe made headlines when she married Lord Francis Hope, heir to the 7th Duke of Newcastle, in 1893. Their union was one of several high-profile marriages between actresses and the aristocracy during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Born in the United States, Yohe's stage debut took place in England in 1887, and she quickly rose to prominence with her performances in plays such as "The Three of Us" and "The Silver King." Her marriage to Lord Hope brought her into the upper echelons of society, and she became a familiar figure in London's fashionable circles. However, the marriage was not to last, and the pair separated in 1900. Despite the separation, Yohe continued to make a name for herself both on the stage and in society. She eventually divorced Lord Hope in 1903 and went on to marry again, to Sir John Edward Harington, 11th Baronet, in 1906. This portrait, taken in 1901, captures Lady Francis Hope at a pivotal moment in her life, as she navigated the complex world of theatre, society, and the aristocracy. Her striking features, elegant attire, and confident expression are a testament to her charisma and the allure that drew her into the upper classes.
