EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving depicts the Mediterranean buckthorn, Rhamnus alaternus, also known as the Italian buckthorn or squilla scabricauda. The illustration is taken from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Sciences, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was engraved by Monsaldi, with drawings and direction by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840). Turpin is considered one of the greatest botanical illustrators of the 19th century, known for his meticulous attention to detail and accurate representation of his subjects. In this illustration, the Mediterranean buckthorn is depicted with its gnarled branches and small, oval leaves, some of which are shown in the process of unfurling. Interestingly, the illustration also includes a crustacean, Lysiosquilla dorsalis, which is shown clinging to the buckthorn's branches. This shrimp-like creature, also known as a mantis shrimp, is depicted both dorsally and ventrally, revealing its intricate and colorful exoskeleton. The Mediterranean buckthorn is a shrub native to the Mediterranean region, with a long history of use in traditional medicine. Its common name, squilla, comes from the Latin word for shrimp, due to the resemblance of its fruit to the crustacean. The illustration's inclusion of the mantis shrimp adds an intriguing connection between the plant and marine life, highlighting the complex web of relationships within the natural world.
