EDITORS COMMENTS
"This poignant memorial, standing at a height of 1.72 metres, honors the memory of Sgt. Charles Ranginawahia Sciasia, a brave New Zealander who made history as the son of an Italian father and a Maori mother. Born in 1892, Sciasia and his brother John played for the Maori All Blacks rugby team in 1913. In 1915, he enlisted in the 1st Battalion of the Wellington Regiment and served valiantly in the Gallipoli campaign. Tragically, on 31 July 1917, at the age of 25, Sciasia went missing during the Battle of Ypres (Ieper), leaving his loved ones and comrades in despair. The memorial was built to commemorate the 90th anniversary of his death, in 2007. The statue's rounded shoulders and bowed head represent a soldier bearing the weight of his equipment, reflecting the heavy burden of war. Sgt. Sciasia's story is a testament to the courage and diversity of the soldiers who fought in the Great War (WW1), and this memorial stands as a reminder of their sacrifices." Date: 2009 Subject: Sgt. Charles Ranginawahia Sciasia Memorial Location: Unknown Description: A memorial statue honoring the life and service of Sgt.
